Maintenance Advocate

Position Summary

 

 

The Maintenance Advocate is responsible for ensuring the safety, cleanliness, functionality, and overall upkeep of the domestic violence shelter and its surrounding grounds. This role supports a trauma-informed environment by maintaining a secure, welcoming, and well-operating facility for survivors and their children. The Maintenance Advocate works collaboratively with staff to promptly address maintenance needs while maintaining strict confidentiality and respect for resident privacy.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

 

Facility Maintenance & Safety

 

  • Perform routine inspections of shelter property, equipment, and systems
  • Complete minor repairs including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and basic HVAC maintenance
  • Ensure all safety features (locks, alarms, lighting, cameras, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers) are functioning properly
  • Maintain exterior grounds including trash removal, basic landscaping, and hazard prevention
  • Monitor building security concerns and report risks immediately

 

 

Cleanliness & Upkeep

 

  • Maintain cleanliness of common areas, offices, and exterior spaces
  • Prepare rooms for new residents including basic repairs and setup
  • Assist with organization of storage areas and maintenance supplies
  • Coordinate deep cleaning or specialized services when needed

 

 

Advocacy & Support Role

 

  • Interact respectfully and appropriately with survivors, maintaining professional boundaries
  • Demonstrate understanding of trauma-informed care principles
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding shelter location and resident information
  • Assist staff with safety-related tasks during resident transitions or emergencies

 

 

Administrative & Team Collaboration

 

  • Maintain maintenance logs, work orders, and supply inventory
  • Communicate regularly with leadership regarding facility needs or concerns
  • Support emergency preparedness procedures and participate in required trainings
  • Follow all organizational policies, safety protocols, and code of conduct

 

 

 

Qualifications

 

 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Experience in general maintenance, facilities, or custodial work preferred
  • Basic knowledge of tools, repair techniques, and safety procedures
  • Ability to pass background check and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to lift, bend, stand, and perform physical tasks as required
  • Compassion, professionalism, and commitment to serving survivors of domestic violence

 

 

 

Work Environment

 

 

  • On-site at confidential shelter location
  • May require occasional evenings, weekends, or on-call availability
  • Must be able to respond calmly and appropriately in crisis situations
