DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the winter meeting of the \n\nNewton County Historical Society!\n \n\nThursday March 3\n\nCommunity Room\, Church of Good Shepherd -4140 Clark Street \n\n7:00 social time\, 7:30 meeting\n\nProgram \n\nMAPS!\n\nWe will display 24 Sanborn Fire Maps* of Covington\, some including Oxford College and Porterdale\, from 1884-1901\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nPlus other historic Newton County maps including a 1901 soil map of Newton showing roads and location of structures \n \n\nPlease bring your own maps of interest to share!\n \n\nWe will also have updates on Historic Jail\, Archives\, Brick Store\, other - We hope to see you there!  Email reminder will be sent.\n\n*What are Sanborn  Fire Insurance Maps?\n\nThe Sanborn  maps are large-scale maps of U.S. cities and towns. Originally designed for purposes of fire insurance assessment\, the maps are highly detailed\, showing not only the location and size of buildings and streets\, but also the placement of water mains\, fire walls\, and other urban features.\n\nEach city or town is mapped on one or more sheet that includes the downtown region\, some housing areas\, and local mills. Outlying mill sites and small populated centers in the country near a town are sometimes included as insets.
